Seattle Hempfest 2010: Live Review

11:50 - Just Arriving & the line is going to be LONG… So far it’s been about a twenty minute wait & the crowd is… Well, stoned. It smells of sweet ganja all through Seattle for a good mile around the park where Seattle Hempfest is held each year.
12:20 - Finally about to “arrive” after my $5.00 donation. Now I get to decide what I want to eat… Do I want a yummy veggie / fallafal gyro? Do I want some curly fries? Perhaps I’ll buy a cookie or two from some of the men selling ganja food.
12:45 - I’m watching some band play some psychedelic guitar non lyrical based song… Everyone around me is staring in awe & I can tell many people are not just partaking in the herb but in some magical mushrooms or some LSD… I won’t bother asking but I know that I am feeling intoxicated from all of the smells & smoke around me ( Not complaining).
1:30 - Now browsing through a bunch of the local art seen in many of the stands around The 2010 Seattle Hempfest & I am extremely delighted to see many political paintings, shirts & other types of really trippy art. Its easy to say that if you are not someone who uses Marijuana that you would still have a great time at the festival by browsing the art, listening to the music & tasting some great organic foods (used with hemp as well). Hemp is showcased throughout the festival showing us all of the great uses & benefits of hemp. There is hemp clothing, bracelets, gyros, medicines, drinks, etc. All which are a great natural/hemp alternative to the products we use today.

Rome Ramirez (Pictured Above) of Sublime with Rome has one of the best new sounding voices in the Ska world.
Obviously there is no replacement for Bradley Nowell, the lead singer of Sublime, but Rome is a great top notch replacement for him. Currently they are on tour throughout the U.S (Although the West Coast isn’t getting a lot of them) with The Dirty Heads. I’m going next Saturday to check them out so I should have a nice review to post up.

Meet: The Tallest Man On Earth
27 Year old Kristian Matsson is The Tallest Man On Earth, which is one artist who lives up to his name.
He released a new album, titled “The Wild Hunt”, which has been receiving some great reviews around the online/indie scene.
“Sometimes at the end it’s hard for me to explain what my own songs are really about,’’ Matsson says. “I’ve never gone out with a plan, with a story. I just go in with a feeling, an emotion.’’
And emotion is all over “The Wild Hunt,’’ from the subdued arpeggios of “Love Is All’’ and the propulsive “You’re Going Back’’ to “Kids on the Run,’’ the only recorded Tallest Man on Earth tune to employ a piano instead of a guitar. “We’re walking our crooked path home,’’ Matsson sings on “Kids on the Run,’’ his voice bleeding into a series of heavily saturated minor chords. “Will we ever confess what we’ve done?’’
The Tallest Man On Earth made a HIT at the 2010 Sasquatch Festival this year with people knowledgeable of Matsson’s talent flourishing to watch him perform live with just an acoustic guitar & a chair.

Unfortunately he isn’t going to be around the NorthWest scene too much… Or the United States at all for that matter this summer. He is playing the MusicFestNW in Portland come September which also has The National, Menomena & The Decemberists headlining which will be a great festival to attend!

Minus The Bear’s new album came out on the 4th of May, OMNI & so far fans aren’t as pleased as they have been in the past. The new sound is a bit more ‘poppy’ with less eccentric lyrics & innuendos. A lot more computer generated riffs non guitar based with more ‘techno pop’ background noise to most of the songs. Minus The Bear is known for their use of DL4s/Looping methods & this album definitely uses plenty of loops for their songs but its not the same classic feel that Minus The Bear has been able to put in each album.
My personal opinion is that they are trying to do what every great band does, and that is to change their sound & stay out of every indie sub genre & make it their own… which when accomplished successfully shows a band is just as great as everyone thinks. Minus The Bear definitely didn’t ‘FAIL’ with this record, but it may be one of those albums where I have to listen to it a few times a day for the next week. I remember when The Strokes’ “Room On Fire” came out… I was disappointed for the first 3 times I listened to the whole album, & then realized how amazing it really was.

Broken Social Scene & their new Forgiveness Rock Record is getting MUCH more hype than Minus The Bear’s new album release, as can be said quite confidently.
My favorite song off of the new album is ‘World Sick’ which is almost seven minutes long & full of different riffs, intros, outros & beats. Similar to an ‘Arcade Fire’ type of buildup to alot of their songs as well… If that makes any sense.
This album definitely feels the most passionate out of any I have heard so far. You can tell they spilt more than their time into each song. Money, Soul, Time & tears… Maybe some sore throats & fingers too. But I don’t have the capability to find that out so we can only assume
Broken Social Scene is playing the Sasquatch Festival Main Stage Saturday the 29th @ 5:35.

The nice pluses about this year is DeadMau5 playing after My Morning Jacket from 11:30-11:55 which should be quite epic, along with Sunday & Monday having a late night Dance Tent act as well.

Lollapalooza 2010 Summary
I reviewed all of the headliners for Lollapalooza & the ONLY band that has more ‘fans attending’ is MGMT… More people are attending The Strokes & MGMT than all of the online Lollapalooza fans of Soundgarden, Green Day, Social Distortion, Phoenix, Arcade Fire… or even *gasp* LADY GAGA! (Why the hell is she playing, by the way?).
After a four year hiatus they are FINALLY back recording & are headlining THIS festival & Splendour in the Grass. The album could be released in the Summer of 2010, but no announcements have been made, nor anything that can be qualified for a real rumour.

New record finally almost here with so much hype, its crazy. They’ve been one of the top 10 blogged about artists for about 7 months straight now… I don’t know of any other bands that have been on that list for that long (See HypeM.com). They have THE most ‘attending fans’ at Lollapalooza this year & I can’t even imagine what their record will bring this year.
